The city is home to numerous industrial companies, dominated by mechanical engineering, metalworking and food industries. Half of all Soviet passenger ships and a third of all merchant ships had their home port in Odessa. Odessa is the most important shipment port in the Black Sea. The city stretches 50 kilometres from north to south along the Bay of Odessa and covers an area of 187 square kilometres. Odessa - with a population of about million - is the third-largest city in Ukraine and has made a name for itself as an industrial centre, cultural metropolis and health destination. However, only after its recapture from the Ottomans did a well-designed, uniform building plan lead to the creation of the chessboard-like and generously proportioned city we see today. Many centuries ago, Slavic tribes settled in the area. However, the history of its settlement dates back much further. Built between 17, it was awarded city status on 2 September 1794. Odessa is a relatively young city compared to Regensburg. Oper © Bilddokumentation Stadt Regensburg
